Obsidian is pleased to announce our 14th season, this year takes us to new heights with a Canadian premiere, the second musical in the company’s history and our new presentation series.

The World Premiere of The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble by award winning Alberta playwright Beth Graham (Drowning Girls) is a heartbreaking but humorous portrait of a family in crisis. Iris struggles with life, family and the unwieldy laws of the universe.

Once On This Island by the creators of Ragtime is a captivating musical set in the Caribbean. It follows the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

A new play by Obsidian’s Playwright in Residence Motion, Nightmare Dream is an intimate, site specific theatre production that moves through space, time and cultural history exploring the African encounter with the ‘other’.
The journey of Simon Dube, an African immigrant haunted by his disconnection to his traditional culture is an evolution of the African self that ebbs into high dreams and terrifying nightmares.
