A heroine across the boundaries of class and caste in a world connected by romance, greed and ambition.
It’s 1905 and Esther, an African American seamstress living in a New York City boarding house for women, sews elegant undergarments for socialites and prostitutes. Desperate for love and a life outside of the boarding house, she begins a friendship with George, a charming Caribbean islander. She finally agrees to marry George even though her heart lies with a Jewish man she can never be with. Esther’s powerful and moving story reminds us of our need to be loved and the heartbreak that comes when that love is denied.
